“People are strange.”
“In what way?”
“They never seem to stay in one place.”
“Well, you can’t expect them to stand still all day.”
“But don’t they have a home?”
“Of course they do!”
“I don’t understand.”
“Think of them like bird-Pokémon.  They have homes too, right?”
“Right.”
“And do birds stay in one place all the time?”
“I guess I understand.  But what about that one?  This is the fifth day in a row she has come by here.”
“Well, maybe she likes it here!  If you like a place, you’ll go to it often.”
“I wouldn’t know; I’ve never left here.”
“You like this place, don’t you?”
“Yes, very much!”
“That is why you haven’t left.”
“But if she likes it here, why doesn’t she live here like I do?”
“Because people don’t live like you do.  You’re... different.”
“Is different good?”
“Only if you see it as good.”

There was a quiet pause, so silent that anyone within an arms-reach away would not even notice the presence of the two.  Kireihana listened to the rustling of the almost-still leaves and watched as the woman spotted earlier disappeared around the corner.  After pondering a while longer, she finally broke the peaceful silence.

“Why do people keep taking Pokémon?”
“Hmm?  What do you mean?”
“The Pokémon who live here, with us.  Why do people keep taking them?”
“Because that’s what Pokémon trainers do:  they catch Pokémon to train them.”
“And the Pokémon just go?”
“That’s the way we live.  People and Pokémon live together.  Strong bonds grow between the two:  bonds of friendship.”
“But what about their families?  Aren’t people taking Pokémon away from them?”
“They will make a new family.  Someday, a bird must leave the nest.”
“But not all Pokémon are birds.”
“Kireihana, you’re missing my point.”  Servine was forced to think for a moment on how to send the message across to the young child; it wasn’t long before he spoke again.  “Kireihana, have you ever met my family?”
“Yes, a few times.  But only when they visit.”
“But do I live with them?”
“No.”
“I could have stayed with them, but I left to start my own family; then I found you.  Now, you’re my family.”

Kireihana nodded in finally understanding what her friend was trying to tell her.  Again, she looked out as far as she could see and watched as a young boy trainer triumphantly caught his second Pokémon.

“I don’t want them to take you.”

Servine looked up, puzzled, at the young girl’s troubled face.  Kireihana continued.

“I’ve seen many Pokémon be captured by other trainers.  I don’t want anyone to catch you.  You’re my best friend.”

Servine looked towards the excided boy in the distance as he released his new friend from its Pokéball.  He tried hard to think of a response, but failed.  As the boy skipped off in the distance, something fell from his pocket; Servine instantly ran up to observe what had fallen.  It was a Pokéball.  He studied it carefully, making sure there was no Pokémon inside.  Seeing there was none to be found, he picked up the Pokéball and rushed it back to his friend who was still waiting, puzzled at his sudden departure.

“Take this and throw it at me.”
“W-Why?”
“So that no one else can; so no one can take me from you.”  He handed her the small Pokéball and stood back, ready for her throw.
“Will it hurt?”
“I don’t think so.  I’ve never been caught before, but I’ve never seen other Pokémon complain.”
“Oh.  Well, I’ll try not to throw too hard.”

Kireihana tossed the ball towards Servine which hit his head, causing him to disappear in a crimson flash.  The ball fell to the ground and resumed to shake thrice before emitting a small ‘click’ sound.  Kireihana slowly approached the now still Pokéball and picked it up, observing the smoothness of the cover.  Her fingers traced the grains along the grey middle before making their way to a small round button and lightly pressing her first two fingers against it.  A similar crimson glow to the one before appeared around the ball, causing Kireihana to extend her arm in surprise.  A crimson flash appeared on the forest floor before Kireihana with Servine in the middle.  The flash faded, revealing Servine smiling up at Kireihana who had reached out her arms.  Servine scurried forward and leaped into her arms, now wrapped around him, and embraced.

“Now no one can take me from you.”
A little sneak peek to my story Legendary Pokémon: A True Family.
I have a (work-in-progress) picture to go with it ... Not expecting it to be done before Winter Break.
